The Toronto Mas Bands Association (TMBA) is a non-profit arts organization founded in 2000 to support the development and promotion of the Carnival Arts. The TMBA is one of the most influential arts organizations in contributing to the wealth and appeal of Toronto's cultural calendar of events and is the reason this parade is the largest festival of its kind in all of North America. It brings in over 1.2 million visitors to the city annually and generates an estimated $462 million in economic growth to the Province.
They produce all of the costumes, big and small, seen in the annual Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival. Combined, they create costumes for over 8,000 masqueraders in addition to the huge King, Queen and Individual costumes which compete at the King & Queen show that takes place the Thursday night prior to the parade at Lamport Stadium. This spectacular event is where the bands vie for the title of ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ of the Bands. Each costume created is a representation of the chosen theme for that band for the current year. Over 6,000 faithful spectators attend this unique, breath-taking event where the ‘mas comes alive’. After months of preparation it all comes down to that one moment to shine. The parade is also a competition where the bands are judged on costume creativity and display and compete for the title of ‘Band of the Year’.
The Toronto Mas Bands Association also participates in the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival- Junior Carnival parade where over 700 children have a chance to display their costumes and bring the culture to life. This parade is also a competition for the bands where they compete for the same titles- Band of The Year, Junior King of the Bands, Junior Queen of the Bands, Junior Male Individual and Junior Female Individual. This event is perfect for the family and is a favorite of the Band Leaders. Costumes for the children are for sale, however, many bands donate a large portion of their costumes to children in need giving them a moment to be in the spotlight.
